Author… and Editor!
As the author of three published novels, many dozens of short stories, and the former Editor-in-Chief of The Stonecoast Review, Shannon is proficient in all aspects of the editorial process. A keen eye for detail and an instinct for storytelling, along with extensive experience within the publishing industry, allows her to assist writers with everything from nurturing a vague idea into a fully realized story to editing a book-length manuscript line by line, word by word.
-
Rather than offering a full developmental edit, Shannon can provide a detailed, 3-5 page evaluation of your manuscript. This overview may include: Identifying what works and what needs attention; suggestions for content, characterization, plot, pace, tone, style, format, structure, and organization; broader recommendations, along with some specific examples, for how to improve the manuscript. This is a great option for writers who want a professional, nonbiased perspective of their project, along with advice on how to move it forward.
-
While some editors distinguish copy edits from line edits, Shannon combines both. This includes, but may not be limited to: Correcting typos, spelling, punctuation, and other grammatical issues; identifying inconsistencies and repetition; fixing formatting issues such as page breaks and spacing; revising/rewriting sentences, phrases, and dialogue to improve clarity and readability; performing simple fact checks; suggesting structural and/or stylistic changes to strengthen the overall project. This level of editing is best for manuscripts that are more fully developed, with elements like plot and characterization solidly in place.
-
As the final eyes on your project before it goes to print (or to an agent, if you are in the querying process), Shannon will read your manuscript thoroughly to check for: Spelling and typos; punctuation; continuity errors; formatting issues such as spacing, indents, and word breaks; design elements such as font, chapter headings, page numbers, and more. This is editing on a nitty-gritty level—the last chance to make your manuscript as clean as possible.
